Goals, positions and ninety minutes

The positions

Goalkeeper (1) The only player allowed to use hands
Defender (3–5) Stops attacks and protects the goal
Midfielder (3–5) Links defense and attack, controls tempo
Forward (1–3) Scores goals and leads the attack

The history of football

From village fields to a global spectacle

Modern football took shape in England, where The FA was founded in 1863 and the first cups and leagues followed. FIFA arrived in 1904, the first World Cup kicked off in 1930, and television then turned the game into the planet’s biggest sporting stage.
